There is no question that the all around MVP award for the Oakland Athletics at the halfway point should go to catcher Stephen Vogt. Vogt has been great offensively and has really become a leader in the clubhouse. Additionally, his versatility makes him extremely valuable to the Athletics.

Vogt was one of the two A’s that will take part in the 2015 All-Star Game. He has certainly earned this recognition for he currently leads all AL catchers in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS. It will also comes to no surprise that he leads his team in hits, home runs, and RBI.

Additionally, Vogt is demonstrating that he is getting better even at 30 years old. Last season, he had nine homers and 35 RBI in 84 games played. This year, Vogt has played in 85 games so far and has 14 home runs and 56 RBI. If he continues this offensive success for the rest of the season, he will continue to lead AL catchers in all major batting statistics.

What makes Vogt special is not just his bat, but also his fielding ability. He is a catcher by trade but also has successfully played at first base and in the outfield. Vogt has embodied the utility player mentality and is able to make himself useful at numerous positions.

Lastly, Vogt is a true leader in the clubhouse for Oakland. All the pitchers compliment him on his game calling, and he has been continually positive in the media throughout the A’s struggles this year. Even though Vogt’s break out season is coming a little late in his baseball career, he has proven that he is the Athletics’ most valuable player at the midseason point.
