A’s To Sign Multiyear Extension With Pitcher Trevor Cahill

According to sources and reports from ESPN.com, right hand pitcher Trevor Cahill is ready to sign a multi year extension with the A’s, this is of course pending a physical. Meanwhile A’s management, as well as Cahill’s agent John Boggs have yet to comment on the matter and are not sure how this news got into the press.   There is news though that an announcement may be made as early as tomorrow.  Cahill has been on the A’s radar for quite a while and it is no secret that the team has wanted to lock up this contract with the 2011 opening day hurler.

During the 2010 season Cahill won 18 games and went 18-8 and 2.97, a huge improvement from his 2009 rookie season where he had 10-13 record and 4.63 ERA.  Cahill had a great 2010 season.  Not only did he get picked to play in his first All Star game, but he also was a strong contender to win the Cy Young award.

As opening pitcher of the A’s first game against the Mariners, Cahill  has posted a 1-0 record with a 1.42 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Cahill does confirm outright that he has been in talks with the team on the matters of extending his contract since the beginning of spring training.  Which brings me to impending arbitration next year in which management will have to pay Cahill a higher salary when that time comes.

The team has already signed pitcher Brett Anderson to a four-year deal worth $12.5 million last Spring and then went on to sign catcher Kurt Suzuki to a $16.25 million contract for four years as well.  Next up after the ink dries on the Cahill contract will probably be Gio Gonzalez who is looking to be picked up long term to avoid years of arbitration.
