The storyline the last two postseasons has been the Detroit Tigers eliminating the Oakland Athletics in Game 5. This morning, the Athletics acquired Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes from Boston in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes. The A’s had a upper hand on everyone in baseball. Yet at the deadline, the Tigers made a deal to compete with the A’s (Yes Verlander, it works both ways), getting David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays.

David Price has been a hot commodity for a very long time, and now he is on the Tigers. The details are still being worked out, but Austin Jackson is one of the players being removed from the Tiger lineup.

Let’s get right to it. David Price has a 3.11 ERA this season. That’s pretty good. The A’s starters are as follows: Jon Lester (2.52), Sonny Gray (2.65), Scott Kazmir (2.37) and Jeff Samardzija (2.92). That’s 4 starters that have a lower ERA than David Price, and Price now has the Tigers’ best starter’s ERA. Don’t worry about the pitching match-ups A’s fans.

David Price is also 1-4 with a 5.06 ERA career in the postseason.

  • The A’s have the better pitching staff. They also have the better offense. Yes, they just lost Yoenis Cespedes. The platoon of Stephen Vogt and Jonny Gomes may provide enough to compensate for the offensive production that Cespedes provided.

On the season, the Athletics have scored 48 more runs than the Tigers, and the A’s face much tougher pitching that the Tigers do in their respective divisions. 3 of the 4 teams the Tigers play in the AL Central have terrible pitching staffs, ranking 27th (Twins), 25th (White Sox) and 17th (Cleveland) in baseball in ERA.

David Price is a solid pitcher, but he will not be enough to counter the moves that the Athletics have been making this season.
