Brandon Moss Injury Update, and His View on the Athletics Depth at First

On Wednesday morning, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle updated A’s fans on the status of Brandon Moss‘ surgically repaired right hip. In her piece, Moss says, “Everything is good. I’m so glad I got this done and that microfracture surgery wasn’t necessary.”

This is obviously good news for the A’s slugger, who struggled noticeably as the season wore on, belting just 4 home runs in the second half of 2014 while batting just .173. Moss is off crutches, and can begin running in six weeks. Slusser also quoted Moss as saying, “I probably won’t be as ready to go as I usually would for spring training, but I won’t be too far behind.”

The big question is whether or not he will be spending spring training in the green and gold. There has been a lot of speculation over what the A’s next move will be be since the addition of Ike Davis last week. For a team that loves to have depth, the A’s seem to have a laughable amount at first base. Moss is one of their best options offensively, and can also patrol the outfield if needed. This value to Oakland also means that he could bring back the largest haul in return for his services.

On the subject possibly being traded, Moss told Slusser, ” I’m trying not to let anything surprise me, because I don’t want to be blindsided. Obviously, I love playing in Oakland, but when this happened, I knew it could mean someone else gets moved.” He went on about Davis, and how he fits with Oakland, “He had one really good season with the Mets, and when I came to Oakland, I hadn’t ever had a year like that. But I do know that sometimes you just need to come to a place where you feel wanted and get an opportunity.”

We all get the sense that the A’s will be going for it again, and not taking 2015 as a rebuilding year. Since this is the case, at least one of Oakland’s current first base options will not make it through the offseason with the team. It could be as simple as non-tendering Davis, but there could also be a flurry of action once the winter meetings begin on December 7th.

Billy Beane did make the Jeff Samardzija trade on July 4th, an American holiday. Guess what tomorrow is. Happy Thanksgiving, A’s fans!
