Canha, Phegley Stand Out in Oakland Athletics Win

Today’s Cactus League action feature the Oakland Athletics visiting Salt River Fields and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The A’s won the game 7-2 and improve to 3-0-1 on the young spring training season.

Righty Kendall Graveman started and pitched two scoreless innings for the A’s. He gave up two hits and recorded one strikeout. The A’s jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and continued to add throughout the game thanks to big days from Mark Canha and Josh Phegley.

Perhaps the news of the injury delays to Stephen Vogt and Nate Freiman gave Canha and Phegley the motivation they needed as they seek to distance themselves in their respective position battles.

Canha, batting cleanup, reached base three times via two hits and a walk, he also scored three runs, and showed great hustle by stretching a single into extra bases on an ensuing error.

Phegley batted fifth and did most of the scoring damage, however. The catcher went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI, and scored two runs.

Oakland’s pitchers combined to allow just four hits, and have now allowed just 10 runs total through the first four Cactus League games.
