Ike Davis has been a pleasant surprise this season. After suffering from Valley Fever for most of 2012 and not performing to his highest ability in 2013 and 2014, many did not see the acquisition of Davis as a significant pickup. The Athletics already had so many first basemen that fans questioned this offseason decision.

However, Davis quickly won over the fans’ hearts with his excellent defensive skills. Even though he is known for having a pretty strong bat, many were excited to see that he also had Gold Glove quality defense at first base. The A’s had never really had a true first baseman before and Davis definitely showed them the benefits.

Davis has a career fielding percentage of .992 at first and has only committed four errors this season – far less than some of the other players on the team. Additionally, he has shown that he is versatile defensively by pitching a scoreless inning for Oakland back in late April. Even though he was on the disabled list for the last half of May and the first half of June, he has jumped right back into the lineup and has continued to display his stellar defense at first base.
