This one is a no brainer. Sonny Gray has stood out among the other strong Athletics’ starters and is Oakland’s second member to join the American League All-Star team. Gray’s success started back in 2013 when he was called up to the MLB midseason, but he has proven this year that he has developed into a true ace for the Athletics.
Gray is currently first in the American League for lowest ERA with a 2.04 and third for wins. He compliments his low ERA and winning record with a 0.96 WHIP. Additionally, he has only allowed five home runs in 123.2 innings pitched.
Even though it was predicted that Gray would digress this season, he has been proving that he is only going to get better as he gains more experience as a Major League pitcher. Just before the All-Star break, Gray completed his third career shutout against the Cleveland Indians. Also, Gray struck out 183 last season in 219 innings pitched. So far in 2015, he already has 108 strike-outs.
Despite his small frame, this 25-year-old has shown that he has the power and skill to strike-out some of the biggest power bats in the league. Whenever Gray takes the mound, it is almost expected that the Athletics are going to win. He has been lights for Oakland again this year and deserves to be awarded the midseason Cy Young.
