Oakland Athletics Roundup: Tuesday, November 3
Evan Scribner did not have a good season in 2015, and that puts him in a tenuous position this off-season. Scribner is eligible for Super-Two status, meaning he has enough service time to get arbitration this year instead of next winter. Scribner, who posted a 4.35 ERA through 60 innings in 2015, is more likely to be cut due to his poor performance than his projected salary.
Given his poor performance and his status as a middle reliever, Scribner is unlikely to even come close to $1 million. Most salary projections put him at about $700,000 – a number that is entirely reasonable.
But do the A’s want him back? In 2015, Scribner was not just ineffective, but hampered by a serious injury. A torn lat muscle forced him to sit out, but not before he went from being a temporary set-up man to a player who couldn’t even be trusted with the biggest of leads.

Scribner’s problem is not control – he allowed just four walks last season, equal to 1.7 percent, and he struck out 26.9 percent of batters that he faced. His problem is home runs and extra base hits, which he allowed at a rate of 5.9 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively. If he could cut down on those two things, he would certainly be a much better reliever.
But can he? That’s something the A’s will have to decide in the coming days, as they weigh whether or not to keep Scribner or try to find better bullpen help on the free agent market.

Free Agent Reliever Sean Marshall Could Be Cheap, Viable Option – Samantha Riley makes the case for looking into free agent reliever Sean Marshall. The Athletics can certainly use a lot of relief help. Is Marshall a good fit for the A’s bullpen?
Stephen Vogt Has Had His Best Season – Has Stephen Vogt reached his peak? Katrina Putnam argues that it will be hard for him to top his 2015 campaign, given his past performance and the presence of Josh Phegley.
