This is a well known story. The Oakland Athletics signed this slugger to a three-year $30 million dollar contract in the hopes that he would provide some power in the middle of the lineup. Many were concerned about this acquisition since Billy Butler’s production had been dwindling since 2012. Their concerns were definitely validated this season.

As many predicted, Butler only further declined offensively in 2015 and was not the power bat the A’s were hoping for. Even though he hit more homers this year than in 2014, he batting average continued to drop from a .271 two years ago to a 2.51 this season. The Athletics were expecting an above-average hitter. What they actually got was an average bat and a below average fielder.

There were many situations where Oakland could have used Butler’s bat this past season. Additionally, there were many instances where they could have benefitted more by having a younger, fitter player running the bases. Unfortunately, now the Oakland Athletics are stuck with him for another two years unless they can miraculously get rid of him. If possible, Oakland should try to limit Butler’s playing time in 2016 unless he demonstrates outstanding improvement offensively during spring training.
