Oakland Athletics: Arrests Made in Fatal Shooting of Prospect Mike Nolan

Matt Spillane of The Journal News reports that four suspects were arrested on Wednesday in connection with last fall’s fatal shooting of Oakland Athletics’ prospect Mike Nolan.

Nolan was critically injured on Sept. 18, when he was shot in his hometown of Yonkers, New York, as he stood in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant with friends.

While Nolan had yet to pitch a game for the A’s, the 23-year-old was drafted in the 18th round of the 2014 amateur draft, making him the 552nd overall pick, and a member of the A’s family. Nolan was selected out of Oklahoma City University, where he gained Oakland’s attention on the mound. Previously, he set the school record in wins at his high school in Yonkers.

Nashaun Hunter, 17, is facing a second-degree murder charge. Garth O’Neil Cole, 22, Tejmitra Singh, 23, and Darren Dawson, 19, are facing first-degree assault charges. All four suspects entered not guilty pleas at their arraignment on Thursday, and are being held without bail.

At the time of the shooting, the Athletics released the following statement:

According to police, Hunter fired six shots from his car into a group of people that were gathered outside of a Burger King. One of the shots struck Nolan in the head. Nolan was unable to recover from the injury, and passed away on Oct. 8 after spending three weeks in a medically-induced coma.

Authorities believe that the shooting was in retaliation for a fight that took place during a drag race earlier that week, but say that Nolan’s car was not involved in the race.
