Citing an “abundance of caution,” Major League Baseball has decided to postpone the Oakland A’s game on Thursday as well.

The Oakland A’s season has come to a screeching halt due to COVID-19. After a positive test on Saturday led to the postponement of Sunday’s game against the Astros, Major League Baseball also postponed the A’s games against the Mariners on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Those postponements are continuing. Citing an “abundance of caution,” the league has decided to also postpone Thursday’s game as well.

The A’s now have three doubleheaders to contend within the span of a week, and then the doubleheader with the Mariners on the final Saturday of the season.

The timing could not be worse for the A’s. While the bullpen has been stellar this season, the A’s rotation has been reeling of late. Jesus Luzardo and Chris Bassitt are the only starters that have performed better than league average, while Frankie Montas has allowed 18 runs in his last 9.2 innings.

Fortunately, the bullpen has been a strength for the A’s, but one has to wonder how long that will last. These doubleheaders, even though the games will be seven innings apiece, will tax the relief corps, especially with there being so many within that week. The additional pitcher for those games will help, but there are only so many arms that the A’s can run through.

With the A’s sitting at 22-12, they hold the second seed in the playoff bracket. However, they are just 2.5 games ahead of Houston. While three of these doubleheaders will come against the rebuilding Mariners, those games will still lead to wear and tear on the roster.
