Nick Allen getting chance to take over at shortstop
There are plenty of questions surrounding the Oakland A’s in 2021, particularly in the middle of their infield. Both Tommy La Stella and Marcus Semien have departed, leaving a dramatic void in the middle of their infield. Chad Pinder and Vimael Machin may be atop the depth chart for now but that is subject to change during spring training.
One potential challenger at short is going to get his chance. Nick Allen was among the A’s prospects extended an invitation to the major league portion of spring training, giving the organization a good look at a player who could be the future at the position.
Nick Allen could be closer than expected
It is easy to discount Allen in the A’s shortstop battle. He is just 22 years old and has yet to appear above high-A in the minors. However, he showed progress with the bat before being sidelined due to injury, and was solid during his time at the A’s alternate camp.

Allen’s glove has been major league ready almost from the moment he was drafted out of high school in the third round of the 2017 MLB Draft. There is no questioning his instincts or footwork at short, which added to his impressive range, soft hands, and excellent arm lead many to think he is a future Gold Glove winner.
The biggest question has always been whether or not he would hit enough to be a major league starter. He showed potential during his abbreviated 2019 campaign, posting a .292/.363/.434 batting line with 22 doubles and 13 steals over his 328 plate appearances. Allen is not going to be a power threat, but he does have enough speed to be intriguing.
Allen now has the chance to show that his performance in 2019 can carry over. Although he may not be on the 40 man roster, he is still getting a chance to show what he can do against major league caliber players. And maybe, just maybe, he will force his way onto the A’s roster sooner than expected.
Nick Allen is going to get a chance to make an impression on the Oakland A’s in spring training. Sometimes, all someone needs is a chance.
