Seth Brown making most of opportunity with Oakland A’s
This is an opportunity that has been a long time coming. Seth Brown had impressed during his minor league career, a prolific slugger who seemingly had nothing left to prove in the minors. He had two seasons with 30 or more homers in his minor league career, including an impressive 37 home runs in 2019. There was not much more that he had left to prove.
That especially seemed to be the case after his debut in 2019. While Brown did not hit any homers, he did hit eight doubles and two triples in his 82 plate appearances. The strikeout numbers may have been a bit high, but Brown had a reasonably solid debut.

That chance never happened in 2020. He had all of five at bats, and had seemingly fallen out of favor with the organization. Then, as injuries have hit the A’s at the beginning part of this season, Brown has returned out of necessity, getting the playing time that he needs.

While the hits have not come just yet, Brown is still making an impact. Two of his three hits have been home runs, including a go-ahead blast on Tuesday as the A’s swept the Diamondbacks. He has also displayed his versatility on the diamond, seeing time at both corner outfield positions and at first base.
This extended look may continue for the foreseeable future. The A’s do not have a timetable for Chad Pinder to return to the lineup, keeping one of their key utility players on the Injured List. Although Brown does not have the same degree of versatility that Pinder possesses, he can still be a valuable part of the bench.
All Brown has needed is the chance to show that he can make an impact. He appeared to have done that in 2019, but remained buried on the depth chart. Now that his time has come, and he is getting consistent playing time at the major league level, he is showing what he can do.
All Seth Brown needed was a chance with the Oakland A’s. Now that he has it, he is making the most of that opportunity.
