Chris Bassitt

Chris Bassitt was one of the biggest surprises for the Oakland A’s in 2020. He went from being a last minute replacement in the rotation to being the staff ace. But there were questions as to whether or not that 2020 campaign would mark a career year or the beginning of his ascension to being one of the better starters in the game.

Bassitt is proving that his breakout season last year was not a fluke. He has posted a 3.21 ERA and a 1.000 WHiP over his 70 innings, striking out 74 batters with just 16 walks. Bassitt ranks fifth in WHiP and strikeouts, tenth in ERA, and eighth with five wins.

The A’s have had the same issues this season when it comes to their rotation. Injuries have hindered their performance, and their starters have been inconsistent. Bassitt, however, is showing that not only was 2020 not a fluke, but that it may have been a preview for this season, as he is developing into a legitimate ace.

At 32 years old, it is fair to wonder how long Bassitt will continue to be this type of pitcher. But the Oakland A’s had high hopes for him when he was acquired in the Jeff Samardzija deal, only to see his career sidetracked by injury. Now that he is healthy, they are finally able to see that pitcher they had hoped for.

Chris Bassitt has had an impressive runs since returning to the majors in 2019. It is time that he is rewarded with an All Star berth.
