As the MLB Draft is approaching, there have been plenty of mock drafts that have taken place. We here at FanSided jumped on that train, with our own mock draft conducted by the site editors. As the Oakland A’s have the 25th overall selection, there was a lot of waiting until our pick was able to be made.

By the time the A’s pick came along, most of the top talent was off the board. However, that does not mean that they were unable to select a potential impact player, as Michael McGreevy was selected with the 25th overall selection.

Oakland A’s take Michael McGreevy in FSMLB mock draft

McGreevy has seen his stock rise dramatically since his time in high school. He had been undrafted after his senior year, heading to UC Santa Barbara. After spending the 2019 season as a reliever, he entered the rotation in the abbreviated 2020 campaign. While he was solid in his four outings, the 2021 season was crucial to his future.

He certainly did his part this past season. McGreevy posted a solid 9-3 record for the Gauchos, with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.180 WHiP over his 101.2 innings, striking out 115 batters with 11 walks. Even though his workload increased dramatically, McGreevy was still able to impress as the season went on.

Armed with a solid four pitch arsenal and excellent control, his success could be traced back to an overall improvement in his offerings. His fastball increased velocity from the lower 90s to the point where he can reach 96 MPH, allowing it to be much more of a weapon. This allows his changeup to play up as well, allowing it to perform better than the relatively average offering it may be.

McGreevy also throws two breaking pitches. His slider has the potential to be a plus offering with more development, especially as his increased velocity also led to a sharper break to the pitch. His curve has the potential to be average, and is not quite as developed as his slider, but could be a respectable fourth pitch with more work.

With his ability to command his pitches, and that uptick in velocity, McGreevy has moved up the draft boards. He is considered to be the 28th best prospect in the draft by MLB.com, someone that should be selected in the first two rounds. With the A’s holding the 25th pick, and their focus on pitchability, McGreevy would be the perfect fit for their system.

The Oakland A’s selected Michael McGreevy in the FSMLB Mock Draft. It would not be much of a surprise if he was the selection when the A’s pick for real.
