Oakland A’s still considered favorites for Trevor Story
The Oakland A’s have been connected to Trevor Story for weeks at this point. Given their lack of production at short, adding Story would make sense – he would give the A’s a Gold Glove caliber shortstop while improving their lineup. Considering that Elvis Andrus has been a disaster with the glove and disappointing with the bat, an upgrade has been needed.
However, it is fair to wonder whether or not the A’s have the pieces needed to bring in a player such as Story. There are questions about the fit financially, and the A’s farm system is not exactly brimming with top 100 prospects. Adding Story to the mix would work in theory, but it did not seem as though it would work.
Oakland A’s still expected to land Trevor Story
However, do not tell that to MLB.com. They still expect that Story will land in Oakland, calling the A’s the best fit for his services. It is even expected that the A’s would include Andrus in such a deal, freeing up the salary necessary to bring Story on board.

There is precedent for the Rockies making that type of deal. The Blue Jays had sent Jose Reyes to Colorado as part of the Troy Tulowitzki trade in 2015 to make that trade work financially. Oakland would need to send more in terms of prospects to the Rockies, but such a deal could be made if the A’s want to clear out those prospects that are close to the majors.
Such a move could also make a difference in the A’s future at the position as well. While there is virtually no chance that they retain Story beyond this year, moving on from Andrus would seemingly open shortstop up for Nick Allen in 2022. His glove is certainly ready, and he has performed better with the bat than expected. A major league role could be his for the taking next year.
The A’s have been willing to make a splash at the trade deadline before. If they can get their bullpen sorted out and keep the lineup healthy, Story could be the piece they need to finally get over the hump in the postseason. But the A’s need to get there first.
The Oakland A’s are still considered to be the favorites to land Trevor Story. It may take some maneuvering, but such a deal could happen.
