The Oakland A’s clearly need help during the trade deadline. Their lineup is in need of added depth, right field and shortstop have been black holes, and the bullpen is in need of help. As strong as the back of the A’s relief corps has been, they have also been overworked as Bob Melvin only has so many arms he can trust.

As such, it makes sense that the A’s are targeting help in the bullpen as the deadline approaches. According to reports, that quest includes Pirates closer Richard Rodriguez.

Richard Rodriguez would be perfect fit for Oakland A’s

It is amazing how much of a difference a few months can make. Heading into the season, Rodriguez was considered a question mark as he was getting his chance as the Pirates closer. Now that the deadline is approaching, he is one of the top relievers in the market.

One can see why the A’s, and other contending teams, would be interested in Rodriguez. He has posted a solid 2.82 ERA and a 0.835 WHiP over his 38.1 innings, striking out 33 batters with five walks. Rodriguez has done well in the closing role as well, with 14 saves in 17 chances thus far in 2021.

While his performance would be enough to entice the A’s, there is far more in his favor. Rodriguez is only making $1.7 million this year and still has plenty of team control left. The A’s would not only be able to fortify their bullpen this year, but for years to come as well. Considering how the A’s had to scramble to fill their relief corps this season, those additional years of control make him even more valuable.

The A’s are obviously not going to be the only team targeting Rodriguez. He may be the top reliever available, and every contending team will be looking to upgrade their bullpen. Even if he heads back to a setup role, Rodriguez will be a hot commodity.
