Khris Davis had become expendable with the Oakland A’s. The former slugger was now a drain on the A’s payroll, sent to the Rangers in a swap of bad contracts. Davis never found his way in Texas, being designated for assignment and released in June.

Nearly two months later, Davis is back. He has signed a minor league deal with the A’s and has been sent to their complex in Arizona, where he will get into game shape.

Khris Davis has important backer in Oakland A’s franchise

While it is fair to wonder what Davis still has to offer, he received one very important endorsement. Jose Canseco, taking time away from selling his merchandise, pumping gas, and hanging around space aliens to give his thumbs up to the Davis signing.

More from White Cleat Beat

Davis had once been one of the more feared sluggers in the game. From 2016 through 2018, he belted a major league best 133 homers, eclipsing the 40 home run mark each season. He also had four consecutive years where he had a batting average of exactly .247, an impressive feat in its own right.

But Davis had not been the same since he injured himself tracking down a foul ball in 2019. From that moment, his power fell off and he was no longer that threat in the lineup. Even his change of scenery did not help, as he had just two homers while producing a .157/.262/.333 batting line in 61 plate appearances.

The A’s do not need to count on Davis. They had upgraded their lineup at the trade deadline, and can afford to stash the former slugger in Triple-A to see if he can regain his form. But there is at least one person who feels that Davis will be able to do just that.

Khris Davis is back in the Oakland A’s organization, a move that former slugger Jose Canseco applauds. Hopefully, he is right about this signing.
