It appeared as though Khris Davis was done. He had been released by the Texas Rangers after a dismal showing to begin the season, his power gone. While Elvis Andrus had hardly set the world afire, the Oakland A’s had appeared to have won that trade.

When Davis came back to Oakland, there were no expectations. He signed a minor league deal, heading to the A’s academy to get back into game action with their Rookie Ball team. On Thursday, he headed to Triple-A, where he will presumably finish out the year.

Oakland A’s could give Khris Davis another chance

The A’s will be watching Davis during these final few weeks of the minor league season. Although they have not made any promises that he will get another look at the majors in Oakland, a strong showing in the minors could help his cause.

More from White Cleat Beat

Davis had a strong start to his time in Triple-A, with three hits, including a double, in his eight at bats. While it is difficult to take those numbers with anything more than a grain of salt given the small sample size, and how offense tends to explode in Las Vegas, it is certainly better than the alternative.

The A’s do potentially have a need for Davis. Mitch Moreland had not been lighting up the box score from the designated hitter position, and has lost playing time to Jed Lowrie. If Davis can regain his power stroke, and show that he could be a facsimile of the player he once was, he could get a look.

But Davis has to do his part first. He just has not been the same since injuring himself while chasing a foul ball in 2019, his power seemingly evaporating despite what appeared to be a minor issue at the time. The A’s do not have any delusions that he will be able to return and be that feared slugger once again, but they are watching just in case.

dark. Next. A's honor Philadelphia past

The Oakland A’s have not promised anything to Khris Davis. However, they are going to monitor his performance at Triple-A closely.
