Former Oakland A’s outfielder Josh Reddick had seemingly landed on his feet once again. After being released by the Diamondbacks, he had signed a minor league deal with the Mets. As the Mets had been dealing with seemingly constant injuries on their roster, Reddick had a chance to find his way back to the majors.

That never happened. He decided to exercise his opt-out clause, leading to his being released by the Mets.

Presumably, Reddick could still find his way onto a postseason roster. If he is signed before August 31, he would then be eligible for the playoffs. Considering his standing as a power hitting veteran bat who has won a World Series before, he could entice a team looking for that type of presence on their bench.

However, Reddick did not exactly live up to that reputation this season. He posted a .258/.285/.371 batting line in his 158 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks, hitting two homers and 11 doubles. His 76 OPS+ was his worst showing in any season where he received at least 100 plate appearances.

He did not fare any better in the Mets’ system. He struggled in his brief time in Syracuse with just six hits in his 38 plate appearances. While he did hit a double and a homer, Reddick also struck out 13 times and did not appear to have much left. Even for a team needing a spark, such as the Mets, Reddick was not worth the roster spot.

But that does not mean another team will not give him a chance. Reddick may still have enough pop in his bat where, in the right situation, he can become an asset once more. As farfetched as that may be, stranger things have happened.
