Oakland A’s manager Bob Melvin shockingly heading to San Diego
The Oakland A’s already had an extensive shopping list this offseason. Now they can add manager to that list.
In a shocking move, A’s manager Bob Melvin is leaving the organization. He will be taking over as the new manager of the San Diego Padres, signing a three year contract to take the reins.
Bob Melvin to be the new San Diego Padres’ manager
The Padres have been looking for the right fit on the bench since firing Jayce Tingler. They feel that they have a playoff team, but need the right person to guide them to the postseason. Melvin, with his experience and leadership, may be what the Padres need to take that next step forward.
It is a shocking loss for the A’s. Melvin had his option exercised for the 2022 season, and appeared to have a job for life if he so chose. He had become the Oakland A’s all time leading winner in managerial wins, and was second in franchise history. He will be difficult to replace.
Even more surprisingly, Melvin is heading to San Diego without any compensation heading to the A’s. The fact that the team allowed him to pursue the opportunity and accept without getting anything in return may not be a good sign for the future of the organization.
The A’s loss is clearly the Padres’ gain. They have gained an excellent manager, one who knows how to actually handle game situations and can get the best out of his players. The Padres, for all of their talent, need someone who can harness the roster and bring them to that final goal. Melvin should be that man.
The Oakland A’s now have a new addition to their offseason shopping list. Manager Bob Melvin is heading to the San Diego Padres.
