Now that the MLB lockout is upon us, the Oakland A’s can focus their attention on matters outside of their roster. The ever-present trade rumors are on hold as the A’s cannot make moves on their 40 man roster. However, that does not mean that they do not have work to do, as the organization needs to find their next manager.

Their focus has turned in that direction. According to reports, the A’s have identified several candidates, with interviews already having taken place.

Oakland A’s starting their managerial search

One would have to assume that the A’s internal candidates would be the favorites for the job. The organization desires continuity in the front office and in the dugout, so having a manager that is already familiar with how the A’s operate would be a bonus.

It is interesting that Ron Washington is not listed as a potential candidate. He is beloved by the A’s front office and has done well coaching younger players. With the team potentially heading down a rebuilding path, he would seemingly be someone that would be a strong option to take over on the bench.

However, Washington’s omission is not the only interesting aspect of this list. None of the candidates mentioned have managed in the majors previously. While one would have imagined an experienced manager would help on a rebuilding team, the A’s appear content to let their next manager learn on the job.

The A’s may also find themselves against a deadline. Matt Quatraro is slated to interview with the Mets as well, and could end up getting an offer there. Should Quatraro impress enough that the A’s want to bring him in to take over for Bob Melvin, they might have to act fast.

The Oakland A’s have begun the process of finding a new manager. They are finally starting to interview candidates, with more talks on the way.
