The Oakland A’s can afford to take their time with Pedro Pineda. He is just 18 years old and a raw talent, filled with impressive tools but in need of coaching. The hope is that, with time and proper coaching, he can be a key piece in the A’s future.

As it is, he has already drawn a great deal of attention. The A’s handed him a $2.5 million signing bonus when the most recent international signing period began, intrigued by his raw skills. It did not take long for Pineda to make his debut stateside as he spent just ten games in the Dominican Summer League before heading to Arizona.

Pedro Pineda impressing Oakland A’s despite his youth

Considering his youth, Pineda had a solid 2021 campaign. He posted a .237/.368/.361 batting line in his 117 plate appearances, with seven extra base hits and six steals. Pineda showed impressive patience as he drew 18 walks, but he also struck out 41 times.

That performance shows exactly how raw he is. While he has excellent bat speed and quick hands, he needs to improve the mechanics of his swing. That can be seen in his strikeout rate as there are holes that can be exploited. However, he does have natural loft to that swing and solid power potential. As he consistently makes hard contact when he does hit the ball, it is entirely possible that he will become much more of a power threat when he makes adjustments to his swing.

Defensively, Pineda has the speed and arm strength to play all three outfield positions. He may be better suited for the corners, but that ability to play anywhere will only help as he moves through the A’s system.

Pineda is going to take time to develop. The tools may be there, but they need to be refined. He still has plenty of work to do. However, it is understandable as to why the A’s would be excited about his future as Pineda could be a future star.
