Another day, another team showing interest in Matt Olson. At least that is what it has seemed like over the past few weeks as Olson has been one of the hottest names in trade rumors despite the ongoing lockout.

Now another team can be added to that list. According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the San Diego Padres may be willing to enter the Matt Olson Sweepstakes.

San Diego Padres showing interest in Matt Olson

It would make sense that Olson would come up in trade talks. The Padres have reportedly reached out to the Oakland A’s about several of their players as they look to strengthen the roster for a push to the postseason. Adding Olson would be a major upgrade at first base over the production they have had over the past few years.

The problem is that the Padres still have Eric Hosmer on the books. While they attempted to move on from Hosmer at the trade deadline last year, even offering one of their top prospects in a potential swap, nothing happened.

While Hosmer can opt out of the final three years of his contract, it is highly doubtful that he does so. That four year, $60 million price tag that is left makes it difficult to move him, even with a top prospect attached. That is especially the case if the thought in San Diego is that he could be part of the return for Olson.

The A’s have been quite clear that they are looking to shed payroll. Unless the Padres are going to pay a large amount of Hosmer’s salary, he will not be heading to Oakland. Another trade would have to be forthcoming in order for their interest in Olson to work out.
