The Oakland A’s unexpected celebrity fan

Every team has its celebrity fans. Sometimes, these fans can be expected; they grew up in the area and this was their hometown team. Other times, the celebrity fandom seemingly comes out of nowhere. Such is the case with the Oakland A’s.

The A’s on NBCS Twitter account sent out an interesting image on Monday morning. It showed Justin Bieber wearing an A’s while piloting a boat, noting that he is a fan of the team.

It is not necessarily a surprise that Bieber would be a baseball fan. His love of sports is well known, as is his skill on the ice. He also plays basketball and soccer while picking up the boxing gloves from time to time.

As such, a love of baseball would not be a shock. However, as Bieber is Canadian, one would have expected his allegiance to be with the Blue Jays or the former Expos franchise, especially as he is a Maple Leafs fan. Instead, he appears to be an A’s fan, with his baseball fandom set in California.

Maybe this fandom can work to the A’s advantage down the line. The hope is that John Fisher will eventually sell the team to someone that cares about the franchise once he has squeezed every last cent out that he can. Bieber may not have the money to purchase the team outright, but he could be a part of a hypothetical ownership group. At least one person there would be interested in the A’s successes on the diamond. And maybe he can bring some fans into the Coliseum if the team can get him to perform the National Anthem during a game.

Justin Bieber is apparently an Oakland A’s fan. While that may be a surprise, hopefully, it can result in a positive in the coming years.
