The Oakland A’s need to add as much talent as possible to their roster. Conner Capel could be a part of the answer.
As part of a series of roster moves, the A’s claimed Capel off of waivers from the Cardinals. Luis Barrera was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Oakland A’s hope Conner Capel can be useful piece for future
There was a time when Barrera appeared as though he could be part of the answer for the A’s. He had been a relatively well regarded prospect when he was signed out of the Dominican Republic, although he took longer to develop than expected. He eventually had that breakout season in 2018 in Double-A, finally working his way to the majors.
However, Barrera has not developed as hoped. He had produced a .235/.290/.329 batting line in his 93 major league plate appearances, hitting five doubles and a home run. This is now the second time that he has been DFA’d this season, although he was able to eventually reclaim his spot on the 40 man roster.
Capel has not had much of an opportunity to prove himself at the major league level either. He has just 19 plate appearances, with three hits, including a homer. However, he does have a solid track record at Triple-A, having posted a .267/.355/.452 batting line with 26 homers and 40 doubles while stealing 26 bases in his 815 plate appearances.
The A’s are hoping that he can replicate that performance in the majors. He has a solid all around skillset in the batter’s box, and paired with his ability to play all three spots in the outfield, could be a viable option moving forward. Capel just needs a chance and he should get one in Oakland.
The Oakland A’s may have found a bargain for their outfield. Conner Capel has the skillset to be an intriguing addition to their roster.
