Sean Murphy took home his first Gold Glove award in 2021. The Oakland A’s catcher has a chance to add to add to his collection this year.
Murphy has once again been named as a finalist for the Gold Glove award at catcher in the American League. He will defend his title against Cal Raleigh and Jose Trevino.
Sean Murphy’s Gold Glove nomination reminder of how Oakland A’s changed
It was not that long ago that the A’s would be represented in multiple places on that list. Last year, Matt Chapman and Matt Olson joined Murphy as Gold Glove finalists. Both players were nominated again this year; however, they were sent away in the offseason.
Murphy may soon follow. He was almost traded away at the deadline and seems to be a certainty to be sent elsewhere this offseason. A’s fans may need to live vicariously through other teams when it comes to defensive success.
He certainly deserves consideration for his second consecutive Gold Glove. While Murphy is considered to have saved just one run behind the plate, his 18.3 DEF rating is the best in the AL and only trails J.T. Realmuto. Murphy also threw out 31% of would-be basestealers while ranking second amongst AL catchers with 40 assists,
This nomination also helps the A’s going forward. Murphy is already considered one of the better defensive catchers in the game and adding another award would only add to his legacy. It could also increase his price tag in trade talks, bringing back a larger haul as the A’s continue their rebuilding process.
Sean Murphy has been nominated for another Gold Glove award. It is now up to the voters as to whether or not he starts his own dynasty.
