The Oakland A’s are looking for major league ready players for Sean Murphy. The Arizona Diamondbacks are looking for a catcher and have outfielders to trade. Could a deal happen?
It is certainly possible. According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the A’s are amongst the teams that have inquired about the Diamondbacks outfielders.
Oakland A’s, Arizona Diamondbacks could get deal to work
Chances are, the A’s would be looking at the Diamondbacks’ pre-arbitration eligible players. Although that would eliminate Daulton Varsho, he would be the most expensive of that group to acquire in the first place. With the A’s being as far from contending as they are, Varsho would not make much sense.
But the rest of Arizona’s outfielders could make sense. Alek Thomas could be someone who needs a change of scenery, a consensus top 100 prospect from 2020 through 2022 who has yet to find the offensive success that one would have hoped for at the major league level. However, at just 22 years old, he has plenty of time to find himself in the majors.
Jake McCarthy, meanwhile, was not as heralded of a prospect despite being a supplemental first round selection. He was viewed as a future fourth outfielder, but found much more success early in his major league career. Pavin Smith and Dominic Fletcher may not be as interesting, but they could be options as well.
Unless the A’s target Varsho, it would take more than those outfielders to send Murphy to the desert. Other prospects, or players who have just started their major league careers, would need to be sent over to Oakland as well. But it is possible that a deal could be made if the Diamondbacks end up as one of Murphy’s more serious suitors.
The Oakland A’s have reportedly inquired about the Arizona Diamondbacks outfielders. It is entirely possible a deal could come together.
