Oakland A's probable pitchers and starting lineup vs Cleveland Guardians, April 20
The Oakland A's will take on the Cleveland Guardians this afternoon looking to snap a 4-game losing streak. The A's were swept by the Cardinals earlier this week and started their current 10-game road trip off on the wrong foot last night, getting demolished 10-2 by the Guardians.
The A's come into tonight's matchup with an 8-12 record, 1.5 games ahead of the Astros who are in last place in the AL West. Last night's loss dropped the A's run differential to -30 on the year. The offense is more to blame than the pitching staff considering that the bullpen has been sharp all season. The rotation has had a rough go, however Alex Wood will look to tighten things up tonight.
It'll be cold in Cleveland tonight, with game time temperatures looking to be in the mid-40's. That could give an edge to the pitchers, though neither have been able to shut down opponents thus far.
Probable starting pitchers
- Alex Wood will take the mound for the Athletics tonight. He enters with an 8.10 ERA and an 0-1 record, despite the A's winning in two of his four starts. In his Opening Day start against the Guardians, Wood got bounced after just 3.1 innings, having allowed 6 runs on 7 hits and a walk. He'll need to bring his best stuff to the mound today if he wants to leave the A's in a good spot.
- Logan Allen gets the nod for the Guardians tonight. He's 2-0 with a 5.06 ERA to start the season, posting 17 strikeouts to just 6 walks. Allen doesn't have elite velocity but has shown excellent control of the strike zone during his brief major league career. He'll look to improve on his results with a matchup against a struggling Athletics' offense this evening.
