The Oakland A's are set to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a three-game set this evening. After last night's loss, the A's sit at 7-10 with a -24 run differential that's good for 27th in the league.

Despite hitting a home run in his lone plate appearance yesterday, Esteury Ruiz is not in tonight's starting lineup. Ruiz mashed in his short stint in Triple-A and has done nothing but hit since the start of spring training.

A's manager Mark Kotsay has opted for the platoon advantage, getting Seth Brown and Lawrence Butler into the lineup over Ruiz. It's certainly an interesting approach given the performance of all of the players involved, but we'll see if Ruiz is used as a pinch hitter later on in the game.

Probable starting pitchers

  • The Athletics will send JP Sears to the mound tonight. The lefty has pitched to a 5.17 ERA in his first three starts, posting a 1-1 record with a 7:6 strikeout to walk ratio. Sears was much better in his most recent outing against the Rangers, going 6.1 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. The A's could use some of that momentum against a tough Cardinals team tonight.
  • Right hander Lance Lynn will get the nod for the Cardinals tonight. He's pitched to a 2.73 ERA in his first three starts, notching 18 strikeouts with just 6 walks. He's yet to record a decision but will look to amend that in tonight's outing against the A's.
