The Oakland A's surprised everyone yesterday, taking down the Yankees 2-0 in the first of a four-game set in the Bronx. Lefty JP Sears shut the Yankees down, going 6 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts and just 1 walk. Sears wasn't credited with the win because the A's didn't score until the 9th, but he absolutely deserved it.
Zack Gelof stepped up in a big spot, blasting a two-run homer in the top of the 9th to give the A's a 2-0 lead. Mason Miller came in for the save and struck out the side, getting Anthony Volpe, Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge in order to secure the win.
Yesterday's victory bumped the A's to 9-14 on the year, tied for 3rd place in the AL West with the Angels. The loss knocked the Yankees out of first place in the AL East, ceding ground to the Orioles in a tight race. The A's will get another chance to keep the forward momentum going with this afternoon's matchup.
Probable starting pitchers
- The red-hot Paul Blackburn will take the mound for the Athletics. Blackburn allowed his first three runs of the season in his last outing against the Cardinals. His ERA sits at an impressive 1.08 and he's posted an 18:8 strikeout to walk ratio. The A's need him to be on his game this afternoon if they want to earn their second straight victory.
- Marcus Stroman will toe the rubber for the Yankees today. He has a 1-1 record and his 2.42 ERA is tops in the Yankees rotation. Thankfully for the A's, Stroman isn't a big strikeout pitcher so they should have some opportunities to put the ball in play and see what happens. Stroman has been a consistently good pitcher for years. He has a career 3.63 ERA in over 1,300 innings and despite the lower volume the last two seasons, he's been good when available.
