The Athletics enter tonight's matchup against the Marlins having won 6 of their last 7, including a sweep of the Pirates earlier this week. They currently sit at 15-17 on the year and are 2.5 games back in the AL West.

Infield prospect Brett Harris was called up and will make his major league debut tonight. He's in the lineup and batting 9th, getting the start at third base. In a corresponding move, shortstop Nick Allen was demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Additionally, infielder JD Davis was activated off the 10-day IL and is starting at first base in his return tonight. The A's transferred RHP Freddy Tarnok to the 60-day IL to clear space for Harris on the 40-man roster.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Lefty JP Sears gets the nod for the Athletics tonight. He's 1-2 on the year with a 4.62 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 33 innings. He's coming off a tough start against the Orioles in which he gave up 7 runs on 8 hits, including 3 homers. He'll face a much softer offense in the Marlins tonight. The fish are 15 games under .500 and are tied for the worst OPS+ in baseball. It should be a good opportunity for Sears to get back on track.
  • Lefty Ryan Weathers will take the mound for the Marlins. He's 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA thus far, filling in for the Marlins who have an entire starting rotation on the IL. Weathers has a 5.26 FIP and has walked nearly 11% of batters faced this year. The Athletics are right there with the Marlins in terms of terrible offenses but they'll face a weak Marlins pitching staff this weekend. They'll need to put runs on the board if they want to win their third consecutive series.
