The Oakland Athletics come into today's matchup against the Pirates with a 12-17 record and sit in 3rd place in the AL West. They managed a 4-6 record on their most recent 10-game road trip and are set to come back to Oakland for a 10-game homestand, starting tonight.

The Pirates are 14-15 with a -6 run differential and are currently 4th in the NL Central. The Bucs have some interesting young talent on their roster, including defensive wizard Ke'Bryan Hayes at third, Oneil Cruz at short, and former Giants' catcher Joey Bart who's been on a hot streak since signing with Pittsburgh.

The A's will avoid nominative ace Jared Jones during this series and top pitching prospect Paul Skenes is thankfully still eating up minor league hitters and won't be in Oakland for this series. It should be a good litmus test for an A's team that has gotten battered by the Guardians but been competent against all other competition. We'll see if the A's can get the homestand started off on the right foot with a victory tonight.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Joe Boyle gets the nod for the Athletics tonight. He's off to a poor start, posting a 1-4 record with an ugly 7.06 ERA. His 24:16 strikeout to walk ratio leaves a lot to be desired, and we can see the downside here as Boyle has failed to control the strike zone and has been taken advantage of by opposing hitters. Boyle has gotten a bit unlucky in terms of BABIP and a low strand rate but the inputs just haven't been good enough. He needs to turn it around or be at risk of losing his spot in the rotation in the coming weeks.
  • Bailey Falter will take the mound for the Pirates this afternoon. The lefty is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 27 innings. He's not a big strikeout guy, evidenced by his below average 17.3% K rate, but he has been successful in terms of limiting hard contact and avoiding home runs. He's had mixed results in his four-year major league career. He's spent about half of his major league innings in the bullpen and has looked better in short stints on the mound, but has had some early success in 2024.
