Oakland A's probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Texas Rangers, May 6
The Athletics will look to get back to .500 tonight as they get ready to face off against the Texas Rangers for a four-game series in Oakland. Winners of 8 of their last 10, the A's have been on a strong run for the past two weeks against some solid competition. They went 4-3 against the Yankees and Orioles at the end of their previous road trip before going 5-1 against the Pirates and Marlins to start their current 10-game homestand.
They'll get the Rangers for four before heading back out on the road for another 10-game road trip starting on Friday. The defending World Series champs have proven to be a formidable opponent the last several years. In 2024, they're a top-10 team by runs scored and are 11th in the league by OPS. They're also a top-10 team by runs allowed per game and back that up with an above average 3.96 FIP.
The Athletics haven't had a record over .500 since the first game of the 2023 season. They were unable to break through on Sunday and find themselves one game under .500 going into a tough series against Texas. The last time these two teams faced off, the A's took 2 of 3. We'll see what the A's have in store for us later tonight.
Probable starting pitchers
- Athletics' lefty Alex Wood gets the nod tonight. He's 1-2 with a 6.32 ERA so far, and is averaging just over 4 innings per start. Signed to lead the A's pitching staff in 2024, Wood has failed to deliver. He's walking over 11% of batters so far and has a .344 batting average allowed. The sinker is his primary offering and having thrown 283 of them so far, batters have hit .383 with a .638 slugging percentage against the pitch. If he's not going to get whiffs, he needs to find a way to limit hard contact. Otherwise we're in for a long season watching him pitch.
- Lefty Andrew Heaney will take the mound for the Rangers tonight. He's having a rough go as well, posting an 0-4 record with a 5.10 ERA in 30 innings. Heaney's strikeout rate is way down compared to previous years. In 2022, his K rate was 35.5%. So far this year, he's at 20.8%, a stark difference. Tonight should be a good opportunity for the A's bats to come alive. We'll see if they can take advantage of the opportunity.
