Postseason Schedule Released: What It Means for Athletics

MLB has released the Postseason Schedule. The Athletics trail the Angels by 10 games, making a Wild Card spot the only realistic postseason possibility. The A’s presently have the top Wild Card spot, and lead by 1 game over the Tigers. The Mariners are 1.5 games back of the A’s, making this weekend’s A’s vs Mariners series in Seattle critical to both teams. The Blue Jays, Indians, and Yankees are also clawing for potential Wild Card spots.
Important Dates:
A.L. Wild Card Game: Tuesday, September 30
ALDS A, Game Three: Sunday, October 5
ALDS B, Game Three: Sunday, October 5
If the Athletics can remain in the top Wild Card seed, they will host the Wild Card elimination game on Tuesday, September 30. Otherwise, if they receive the second Wild Card seed, they will travel on the road for that game. If the A’s can produce a win in the Wild Card game, they will play in the ALDS starting on Thursday, October 2nd for Game 1 and 2. As the winning Wild Card team, they would begin that series on the road for those two games, and would play in Oakland on Sunday, October 5th for Game 3, and, if needed, Monday, October 6th for Game 4. ALDS Game 5 would be played, if necessary, on Wednesday, October 8th at the home stadium of the division winner.

As it stands now with a little more than two weeks to play, it appears as if the A’s will face either Max Scherzer (16-5, 3.19 ERA) of the Detroit Tigers or Felix Hernandez (14-5, 2.12 ERA) of the Seattle Mariners in the Wild Card game. The A’s would undoubtedly send Jon Lester (14-10 for the season, 2.12 ERA) to the mound for this match-up. He is 4-3 with a no-decision for the Athletics.
